BBC refuses to hand over evidence on Islamics to Police

The BBC was facing a clash with the Metropolitan Police last night after refusing to hand over videotapes to prosecutors investigating two Muslim clerics suspected of inciting violence.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has instructed the Met to obtain the full, unedited 'rushes' of interviews with two controversial Islamic preachers, broadcast in August on Newsnight

The CPS wants to establish whether there are grounds to prosecute Abu Uzair, a former leading light of the radical al-Muhajiroun movement and a leader of the Saviour Sect, an Islamic group whose members include those who have allegedly endorsed suicide bombings. Prosecutors are also considering bringing a case against another radical cleric, Abu Izzadeen.

Uzair told Newsnight: 'We don't live in peace with you any more. The banner has been risen for jihad inside the UK.' In the same programme, Izzadeen said the bombings would make people 'wake up and smell the coffee'. The interviews prompted widespread public revulsion.

The CPS has considered bringing a number of charges against the two, including incitement to treason, solicitation of murder and incitement to withhold information known to be of use to police. The Met approached Newsnight requesting copies of the interviews earlier this month, but the programme declined to hand over the full material. However, it is believed to have offered transcripts of the broadcast.

On 9 September, an application was made to recover all the interview material.
But last night the BBC showed little sign it was prepared to give up the tapes without a fight. 'The Metropolitan Police has agreed to provide us with further information so we can consider its application properly,' said a spokeswoman for the programme.

She declined to comment further, but it is believed the broadcaster believes handing over the material could compromise its journalistic independence.
Newsnight assistant editor Ben Rich wrote an online article defending the interviews shortly after they were broadcast. 'The issue of extremism is a very difficult one for broadcasters, and sadly often causes offence. It was our view that it was a legitimate part of our role to identify and demonstrate these problems, and discuss how they should be addressed,' Rich wrote.

The CPS made a similar request for co-operation from the Sunday Times, which earlier this year sent a reporter into the Saviour Sect. The paper's investigation led to allegations the Saviour Sect encouraged its followers to commit acts of violence.

One of the sect's leaders, Omar Bakri Mohammed, was quoted as telling supporters shortly after the London bombings: 'For the past 48 hours, I'm very happy.' Two weeks later, he referred to the bombers as the 'fantastic four'. The newspaper handed all its material to the police. The CPS is considering whether to bring charges against Bakri if he returns to the UK.

Orders for broadcasters to hand over videotape are not unknown. Earlier this month police investigating disorder during the G8 summit issued a court application to seize footage from BBC Scotland and Scottish Television.
In 2002 in Belfast, Judge Patrick Markey - in secret session - ordered the BBC and Ulster Television to hand over their footage of rioting in Drumcree.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police declined to comment.

Flower arranging has twice the value of Maths, an A grade at A level no less, no doubt the same applies to English. Any A level grade A is worth 270 points, even “call handling” whatever that is gets 480.

This is utterly pathetic, we are creating a nation of dunderheads, how on earth are we to compete with other nations when we have a nation of Flower arrangers or media students.

This must be the "Ashes of British Education," once the finest in the world it is now the joke of the world

WITH DIGNITY AND RESOLVE

The southlands of America have suffered a cataclysmic blow from mother nature, people have died countless numbers have had thier lifes work smashed to pulp, this is enough to break many people.

Yes there will be broken people in America as a result of this act of nature but when you look at the images that are coming out of America what do you see,
yes, there is distruction, on a huge scale, yes, there is human sadness and there is death.

Look again, do you see a people waiting around for somebody else to do something, no, do you see a disabled population, no. What you do see is a populus behaving with pride and dignity setting about repairing and rebuilding
thier lives, thier homes and thier cities and towns.

America certainly has the resouces to manage this crisis, it population has the resolve to make sure this happens, and it will.

There will be no international appeals for aid, our televisions will not be assailed by images designed to make us donate, there will be no humanitarian
pleas, (this is exclusivley for the third world) therefore we must make it known that people do support and empathise with the people of America even though we as individuals can do little in practical terms to help them.

Somebody flagged the previous post as objectionable, would that person kindly state what they find ojectionable, if it is the reference to Mohammed then you must remember that Ayesha became his wife in her pre-pubescent years
does that not offend you?

I notice that the article on slavery of children did not offend you, (please correct me if I am wrong) I find the enslavement of any individual and especially children highly objectionable

KHARTOUM, Sudan (Mar 15, 1996 11:45 p.m. EST) -- Thousands of southern
Sudanese children, captured by northern Arabs in Sudan's long running
civil war, have been sold into slavery or forced to convert to Islam,
according to clandestine Christian groups working for their release.

According to documents obtained by The Times, and interviews with
victims of slavery, the practice has been quietly condoned by the
Islamic regime in Khartoum.

Most of the slave children come from the Dinka, Nuer and Shilluk
tribes, nomadic pastoralists who have been traded for centuries as
slaves by their northern neighbours. But since the Khartoum regime
armed ethnic Arab tribes like the Bagara of Kordofan and Dhafur, the
practice of slavery has increased dramatically. The Nuba from central
Sudan and the Toposa from the remote south close to Kenya have also
fallen victim to the trade in human beings.

Using a network of undercover Dinka chiefs posing as labourers in
Kordofan and neighbouring Dharfur provinces, the church groups have
managed to smuggle 1,000 children away from their "owners" and
reunited them with their parents. The undercover agents against
slavery said that they estimated at least 3,000 other children remain
to be released.

"The slavery is obviously racially based. Black people are considered
slaves by this regime, whatever its claims to adhere to the Koran's
teachings on the equality of men," said a cleric behind the
anti-slavery operation.

Testimony from southerners in Juba, close to the border with Uganda,
shows that while cargoes of arms head south as part of Khartoum's war
efforts, barges and planes return to the north carrying children.
Those like "Sarah," taken by officers, end up as unpaid domestic
workers.

"I am well treated here," she said. "I look after the officer's
children, and they feed me every day." Others have been found in
Wad-el-Hanan village, 200 miles southeast of the capital. They are
well fed, taught the Koran, but drained of a pint of blood each week
which is then sent to the front line.

The older children, under cover operators said, were given weapons
training and sent to fight against their Christian and animist
tribesmen in the south.

This week a church group has sent a team of lawyers and undercover
workers to try to rescue 21 children, whose lives are much worse. They
have been found working in fields owned by Arab landlords after being
sold into slavery by the Bagara in South Dharfur.

In addition, a lawyer has been hired to sue for the release of Abuk,
14. She was captured from her parents in South Dharfur four years ago
and sold to a man called Ali.

"He treated her brutally and she managed to run away. She was taken in
by another Arab, called Ahmed in Fardos -- a small village close to
el-Fasher, capital of the province. He took over ownership of the
child," said her case worker.

Abuk's new owner was tracked down by the man who bought her. The two
quarreled, and then took the case to their chief. The elderly local
leader referred Abuk and her rival owners to the police, who demanded
bribes. They appealed to the local Sharia court which, rather than end
Abuk's nightmare, opened another chapter of horrors.

Having been converted to Islam by her first owner, Abuk is now called
Amasha Ali. The court has ruled that she cannot therefore be released
into the care of "infidel" Christians, even if they are her parents.

Treated with as little regard as an animal, someone has also raped
Abuk, who is now four months pregnant.

"Her parents are desperate, and so are we. We are having to fight in
the courts for the freedom of a girl kidnapped from her own parents,"
said her case worker.
